Undivided is a name of an international quartet formed by a Polish clarinetist Wacław Zimpel and supported by a remarkable section: Klaus Klugel-one of the most important musicians of the European avant-garde, and Mark Tokar-an outstanding Ukrainian double bass player who co-operates, among others, with Ken Vandermark, Yuri Yaremchuk and Steve Swell. The fourth member of the quartet is Bobby Few-a legendary musician of the improvised scene, the successor of Thelonius Monk and Bud Powell.
Their first album ('Passion', Multikulti Project 2010) was enthusiastically received by music critics all over the world. It was, for instance, awarded with Honorable Mention by the acknowledged internet portal All About Jazz.
This time Undivided comes back as Quintet with Perry Robinson, one of the best contemporary clarinetists, who has already played or recorded with Henry Grimes, Bill Dixon, Nana Vasconcelos, Carla Bley, Archie Shepp, Charlie Haden and Anthony Braxton.
Undivided is an attempt to present various states of human mind and consciousness by means of organization of sounds in compositions. To this end, Wacław Zimpel combines tradition of free jazz with folk music and new music composition techniques. Perry Robinson refers in his play to no longer existing world of Jewish musicians-sometimes nostalgic and sometimes ecstatic in his artistic expression.
On the occasion of the Tzadik Festival concert the group will also present their new album recorded during the 2009 tour.

    Herausgeber's Info:

[. . .] the most remarkable effect is the intensity and the emotional impact and of the music, though this is a disciplined and restrained collective ensemble. Zimpel's beautiful compositions are built like dramatic suites that emphasize an inner turmoil and search for spiritual quietude. His writing covers a broad spectrum of feelings, from melancholy and fragility on "Hoping the morning say" and meditative, modest reverence on "Moves between clouds," to the peaceful joy and spiritual elation of the concluding "What a big quiet noise."

This is a fascinating live recording. One that should be listened to at night to get the full experience. Undivided is a collective born from the mind of clarinetist, Waclaw Zimpel, who has worked with Ken Vandermark, Robert Kusiolek and Aram Shelton to name a few.

On first listen you may automatically get the feeling of late 60's free jazz floating throughout the pieces. But as you continue to absorb the music you will grasp hold of the experiments that quintet are reaching for on their second release, Moves Between Clouds (MultiKulti Records). It reminds of when hard bop began its transition towards free jazz. There's still shadows of expressive melody but there is more of an introspective quality to the music that is rich and rewarding.

With three long tracks the audience and you the listener get a much more in-depth experimentation in sound than the rolling epic of their debut, The Passion. As with late Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Jimmy Giuffre and even some Donald Byrd records of the time period, Moves Between Clouds has a spiritual and almost folkish element to it.

The addition of Perry Robinson to the quartet gives this live recording it's cultural feel. The title track bares this out. 'Moves Between Clouds' has Robinson and Zimpel sharing and intertwining passages. Few's playing underlines the contemplative nature of the piece. It's a slow, droning number that only hits heavy notes when Tokar and Kugel raise the pulse (only slightly) keeping the listeners sense of adventure engaged.

Moves Between Clouds is blissful and hypnotic in its delivery. Few's repetitive tones are matched by Robinson and Zimpel beautiful rising arpeggios on both 'Hoping The Morning Sky' and the closing number 'What A Big Quiet Noise'. Kugel as always makes an impact with crisp and exploratory timing.Undivided have presented one of those solid live performances that you wish you were in the audience that night. Thankfully the date was recorded and we can all experience it. Excellent stuff.

polish-jazz.blogspot.com - ALBUM OF THE MONTH

    freejazz-stef.blogspot.com, Saturday, September 17, 2011, rating: * * * * 1
Last year, Undivided's 'The Passion' won the 'Happy New Ears Award', organised by this blog after a vote among you, readers. So it was with more than genuine interest that we started listening to its successor, which has again great artwork, both on the cover and inside the album.

Thematically, the music shifts from Christian spirituality to Judaism, with the reference of 'Ohr Ein Sof' on the inside package, or the 'infinite light' as described in the torah, of the creator's state of being before he created.

The band consists of Waclaw Zimpel on clarinet and bass clarinet, Perry Robinson on clarinet, Bobby Few on piano, Mark Tokar on bass and Klaus Kugel on drums. Adding Perry Robinson on clarinet was a clever idea, because both clarinets give each other depth and contrast.

The music is as before clearly indebted to the Coltrane legacy, including Alice Coltrane, with long and slow thematic developments, post-bop, but then less focused on the musician's individual soloing as it is on the overall effect created by the entire band. As the spiritual theme might suggest, the compositions are full of reverend, solemn drama, exalted and expansive, trying to capture this state of being where there are no boundaries, no demarkations, no differences. Yet this does not mean that there is no musical substance here, quite to the contrary, the compositions, the harmonic development, the playing itself is again fantastic, with its own yearning aesthetic, and its integration of elements of various jazz subgenres, including today's music, but also klezmer. And all this is brought with the ambition of a classical symphony, flowing endlessly, full of majesty and grandeur.

A band with a great musical vision, and pitch perfect delivery. Again a great achievement.

There's an overwhelming sense of arrival, almost processional, heard on "Hoping the Morning Say," the opening track of Undivided's Moves Between Clouds. The majestic rumblings of pianist Bobby Few, drummer Klaus Kugel and bassist Mark Tokar provide supple backing to Perry Robinson's bluesy clarinet and Waclaw Zimpel's intense bass clarinet. The anxiousness of such a lengthy welcoming subsides with the more meditative title track. Here, Few's somber block chords lead a serene woodwind theme and an engaging conversation between Robinson and Zimpel. There's a seamless transition into the third and final piece on the disc, "What a Big Quiet Noise," where Few and Kugel stir things up noisily, giving way to a staccato-infused gathering of the ensemble. A big quiet noise indeed occurs with an extended unaccompanied bass solo. Tokar's fierce approach and undeniable technique give way to one of the more captivating moments of the session.

    www.multikulti.com:
Undivided to sztandarowy, międzynarodowy kwartet prowadzony przez Wacława Zimpla. Obok klarnecisty kwartet tworzy niezwykła sekcja rytmiczna: Klaus Kugel - jeden z najwybitniejszych muzyków europejskiej awangardy (współpracował m. in. z Bobo Stensonem czy Tomaszem Stańko) oraz Mark Tokar - wybitny ukraiński kontrabasista (nagrywa m. in. z Kenem Vandermarkiem, Yurijem Yaremchukiem, Stevem Swellem). Czwarta osoba to legenda wangardowej sceny - Bobby'ego Few, spadkobierca pianistyki Theloniousa Monka i Buda Powella. All About Jazz - New York.
Undivided to próba opisu poprzez muzyką różnych stopni świadomości człowieka. Sposób organizacji materii dźwiękowej w muzyce Zimpla, nawiązuje do tradycji free jazzu, muzyki ludowej różnych kultur oraz do nowoczesnych technik kompozytorskich współczesnej klasyki.

    www.multikultiproject.blogspot.com:
W pierwszej kompozycji 'Hoping The Morning Say' masa dźwiękowa niesie się, wręcz rozpływa horyzontalnie. Tworzy ją przede wszystkim fortepianowy i perkusyjny szum, zaś temat podany jest w sekcji dętej. Bobby Few posługuje się rozwlekłymi glissandami i arpeggiami, ewokując efekt nieokreśloności wysokości dźwięków, w czym przypomina grę pianisty Matthew Shippa oraz Chrisa Abrahamsa, członka zespołu 'The Neks'. 'Moves Between Clouds' cechuje ilustracyjność, dzięki czemu kompozycja silnie oddziałuje na wyobraźnię.

The Jazz Word - thejazzword.blogspot.com
There's an overwhelming sense of arrival, almost processional, heard on "Hoping the Morning Say," the opening track of Undivided's Moves Between Clouds. The majestic rumblings of pianist Bobby Few, drummer Klaus Kugel and bassist Mark Tokar provide supple backing to Perry Robinson's bluesy clarinet and Waclaw Zimpel's intense bass clarinet. The anxiousness of such a lengthy welcoming subsides with the more meditative title track. Here, Few's somber block chords lead a serene woodwind theme and an engaging conversation between Robinson and Zimpel. There's a seamless transition into the third and final piece on the disc, "What a Big Quiet Noise," where Few and Kugel stir things up noisily, giving way to a staccato-infused gathering of the ensemble. A big quiet noise indeed occurs with an extended unaccompanied bass solo. Tokar's fierce approach and undeniable technique give way to one of the more captivating moments of the session.

www.multikulti.com:
Undivided to sztandarowy, międzynarodowy kwartet prowadzony przez Wacława Zimpla. Obok klarnecisty kwartet tworzy niezwykła sekcja rytmiczna: Klaus Kugel - jeden z najwybitniejszych muzyków europejskiej awangardy (współpracował m. in. z Bobo Stensonem czy Tomaszem Stańko) oraz Mark Tokar - wybitny ukraiński kontrabasista (nagrywa m. in. z Kenem Vandermarkiem, Yurijem Yaremchukiem, Stevem Swellem). Czwarta osoba to legenda wangardowej sceny - Bobby'ego Few, spadkobierca pianistyki Theloniousa Monka i Buda Powella. All About Jazz - New York.
Undivided to próba opisu poprzez muzyką różnych stopni świadomości człowieka. Sposób organizacji materii dźwiękowej w muzyce Zimpla, nawiązuje do tradycji free jazzu, muzyki ludowej różnych kultur oraz do nowoczesnych technik kompozytorskich współczesnej klasyki.

www.multikultiproject.blogspot.com:
W pierwszej kompozycji 'Hoping The Morning Say' masa dźwiękowa niesie się, wręcz rozpływa horyzontalnie. Tworzy ją przede wszystkim fortepianowy i perkusyjny szum, zaś temat podany jest w sekcji dętej. Bobby Few posługuje się rozwlekłymi glissandami i arpeggiami, ewokując efekt nieokreśloności wysokości dźwięków, w czym przypomina grę pianisty Matthew Shippa oraz Chrisa Abrahamsa, członka zespołu 'The Neks'. 'Moves Between Clouds' cechuje ilustracyjność, dzięki czemu kompozycja silnie oddziałuje na wyobraźnię.

[. . .] Jeden z najbardziej wirtuozerskich duetów klarnetowych w historii jazzu. Orgia brzmień, odniesień i rytmów. To właśnie muzyka międzynarodowego kwartetu Undivided, którego liderem jest poznański klarnecista Wacław Zimpel.
[. . .]
Kilkadziesiąt minut muzyki będącej prawdziwym dynamitem, a jednocześnie kwintesencją nastroju medytacji. Muzyki pełnej energii, a zarazem wprowadzającej w trans.
