"So because thou art lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spew thee out of my mouth" (Revelation 3:16) is the inspirational title coming from the bible, yet indirectly via the novel "Warm and Cold" (Pol. "Ciepło, zimno") by the Polish author Adam Zagajewski. The music itself is based on sephardic songs from the Balkans, and on folk songs.

The band are Olgierd Dokalski on trumpet, Wojciech Kwapisiński on guitar, Oori Shalev on drums, and my compatriot Zeger Vandenbussche on saxophones, clarinet and Jew's harp.

Sure, the four musicians tapped into some deep cultural roots to bring their music, but what they bring to the surface is innovative, moving and strong. In contrast to much of Zorn's Radical Jewish Culture series, the music brought here is more eclectic, broader and rhythmically more subtle.

The result is melodious, free and beautiful, with an approach that's maintained throughout the album, and with tunes that you will go back to, just for the sweetness of their sounds, the beauty of the solos cutting loose from the themes, the mesmerising hypnotism of the guitar that acts like a bass at times, the great drumming and the perfect interplay between the horns. And this full of joy for the music itself, full of passion and empathy.

Some people believe that music is all about technical skills on the instrument. These four guys demonstrate that real artistry is somewhere else, in a place with deep emotion, sonic beauty and spiritual resonance.

A great album by an unknown band. Another discovery from Poland (and Belgium).

"Of all usual blah blah blah (exceptionally ill-thought and bad-written) provided to us by recording label (in this case Multikulti) only two descriptions of this music deserve to be taken seriously: "pain" and "euphoria". These may very well be keywords to describe any music aspiring to something more than just another piece of usual, overwhelming pop shit. If you are fed up with all-copying-one-after-another mainstream culture (and jazz!) and want to fly away to off-world of alternate music you should definitely reach out for this disc. Instead of a mirage of Hollywood "happy ends" it offers simply boundless sadness. Instead of popularity of mass media prostitutes of Paris Hilton or Rihanna kind, it proposes a glimpse of euphoria, of exultation, of satori.

By all this I don't want to say that it is flawless in itself. On contrary! It is much here to be improved. For example level of recording is difficult to appraise. Recording label only sent us music in mp3 which sounds played on my Marantz KI Signature Hi-Fi rather flat and lacking of space. Also, to be entirely honest, the musicians are not virtuoso or music exceptionally complicated and original. But all these imperfections are more than counterbalanced by incredible emotionalism, authenticity and spontaneity thanks to which this album by far surpasses many other CDs released in this year 2013.

Before we move to the conclusion and usual mantra of "wholeheartedly recommended" or "must-listen" let me give you few facts about this project. Nor Cold is a collective of four musicians of which young trumpeter Olgierd Dokalski is probably the best known, at least to Polish audience. Co-founder of two interesting bands: Kirk and Daktari he is walking on free side of jazz if such a labeling has any sense at all in the beginning of XXI century. Distinctive feature of his art is continuous interest in Jewish music which is also present on this recording in delicate references to Sephardic songs of Balkan Jews.

Another Polish musician involved in this project is guitarist Wojtek Kwapisiński who collaborated with Dokalski in Kirk and also co-created interesting ethnojazz duo Gamid Group. They are supported by Belgian saxophonist Zeger Vandenbussche and Israeli drummer Oori Shalev, currently residing in Berlin. Their input deserves as much accolade as that of Polish musicians since this music is first of all collective effort. Unlike mainstream jazz we have here no usual collection of solos and supporting rhythm section but rather well thought-out story, developing logically one piece after another. Yet, as I said before, this solid frame is filled up with emotions of such intensity that it leaves us with impression of total freedom, if not in form than at least in spirit.

All in all, this is of course "wholeheartedly recommended" and "must-listen", but on top of these so-much-worn-out adjectives there is here simply exceptional passion of artists involved in creation of this music. It made a listening to this album an experience special and rare."

Na początku była płyta Biviendo En Kantando z archiwalnymi, pochodzącymi z początku XX wieku nagraniami sefardyjskich Żydów z Bałkanów. Ta trzeszcząca, chropawa, ale za razem piękna muzyka w niemal metafizyczny sposób zainspirowała twórcę projektu – Olgierda Dokalskiego (kIRK, Gaamera, Daktari) – trębacza i kompozytora poszukującego nieoczywistych brzmień i rozwiązań muzycznych. „Słuchanie archiwalnych pieśni ladino wprowadziło mnie w stan bliski melancholii. Próba ich odegrania ów stan jeszcze pogłębiła. Pomysł na interpretację tych archiwalnych nagrań wykrystalizował się całkiem naturalnie. Pojawiła się we mnie chęć podzielenia się tym uczuciem. Chęć uwolnienia w muzyce emocji, które uzewnętrznią ból i euforię zarazem, spowodowane nieuchronnością upływu czasu”– tak o swoim projekcie mówi autor.

Do udziału zaprosił grającego na gitarze i tar Wojciecha Kwapisińskiego oraz perkusistę Oori Shaleva z Izraela i belgijskiego saksofonistę Zegera Vandenbusschea.

Historia opowiedziana na płycie czerpie z trzech kontekstów: Apokalipsy Świętego Jana, powieści "Ciepło, zimno" Adama Zagajewskiego oraz z archiwalnych nagrań "Biviendo en kantando - life as a song (Sephardic Songs From The Balkans At The End Of The 19th Century)".

Zespół powstał na początku 2012 roku. Muzyka, która znajduje się na płycie w dużej mierze opiera się o materiał przygotowany dla festiwalu Nowa Muzyka Żydowska. Premierowy koncert grupy odbył się w kwietniu zeszłego roku właśnie na tym festiwalu.

Płyta ukazuje się dzięki kooperacji festiwalu Nowa Muzyka Żydowska i wydawnictwa Multikulti Project, przy wsparciu Instytutu Adama Mickiewicza.


Olgierd Dokalski - muzyk, gnostyk, cybernetyk. Urodzony w Warszawie. Gra na trąbce. Samouk. Muzycznie mocno związany z kulturą Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej. Aktywna postać na warszawskiej scenie muzyki improwizowanej.
Olgierd Dokalski tworzy oprawy muzyczne do przedstawień teatralnych i filmów oraz współpracuje z renomowanymi artystami i muzykami z kraju i z zagranicy. O jego muzyce w samych superlatywach wypowiadają się Michael Gira (Swans) i pionier future-jazzowej trąbki Nils Petter Molvaer.
Prowadzi kwintet Daktari, kwartet nor cold (polsko-belgijsko-izraelski kolektyw odtwarzający we współczesnym kontekście muzycznym sefardyjskie pieśni z bałkanów z początku XX wieku), współtworzy zespoły kIRk, Altona i Jan Czapla. Obecnie zajmuje się głównie swoim trio, z którym pracuje nad projektem translacji teorii Przestrzeni Filmowej Poza Kadrem (autorstwa Grzegorza Królikiewicza) na pole muzycznej performatyki.

Wojciech Kwapisiński - Muzyk, gitarzysta, kompozytor. Absolwent filologii polskiej, student filozofii. Jego działalność muzyczna oscyluje przede wszystkim wokół muzyki improwizowanej i muzyki klezmerskiej. W kręgu jego twórczych zainteresowań leży także free jazz i muzyka etniczna. Jest współtwórcą projektów Gamid Group, Altona, Gaamera, Wojtek Byczkowski i członkiem zespołu Zwichnięci Dandysi. Współpracował z Teatrem Mufmi, Anną Nowicką i Justinem Kennedym, tworząc oprawę muzyczną do spektakli i performance'ów. Uczył się od Krzysztofa Knittla, Tadeusza Wieleckiego, Ryszarda Lateckiego, Patryka Zakrockiego, Rafała Sarneckiego. Jest członkiem nieformalnej grupy Antikonsjum.

Oori Shalev - Izraelsko-niemiecki muzyk, perkusista i artysta dźwiękowy. Urodzony w 1979 w Izraelu, od 2006 mieszka w Berlinie. Zajmuje się przede wszystkim muzyką improwizowaną, interakcją muzyczną i świadomym słuchaniem. Jako perkusista zakorzeniony jest w muzyce jazzowej. Mieszkał w USA i Indiach, zdobywając umiejętności gry na instrumentach z całego świata. Łączy ze sobą wpływy tradycji i muzyki Zachodu. Buduje swoje własne instrumenty, tworzy instalacje dźwiękowe, jest jedną z najważniejszych postaci berlińskiej sceny muzyki improwizowanej.

Zeger Vandenbussche - Studiował filozofię na Uniwersytecie w Gent i w Sewilli oraz saksofon w Królewskim Konserwatorium w Gent i w Nowym Jorku, gdzie uczył się od Tima Berne’a, Tony’ego Malaby’ego, Steve’a Colemana, Raviego Coltrane’a i Jima Blacka. Będąc aktywnym członkiem belgijskiej i berlińskiej sceny muzyki improwizowanej odbywał trasy w Niemczech, we Francji, Holandii, Irlandii, Grecji, we Włoszech, Hiszpanii i Portugalii. Poza swoją aktywnością na scenie muzyki improwizowanej, pracuje także jako kompozytor dla Brukselskiej grupy teatralnej Ensemble Leporello.

In the beginning was the album "En Biviendo Kantando" from the archivals, coming from the early twentieth century recordings of Sephardic Jews from the Balkans. The creaking, rough, but beautiful music is composed in an almost metaphysical way to inspire the creator of designs - Algirdas Dokalski (Gaamera, Daktari) – a trumpeter and composer searching for obvious sounds and musical arrangements. “Listening to archival Ladino songs introduced me in a state close to melancholy. Attempting to play even deepened that state. The idea for the interpretation of the archival recordings crystallized quite naturally. There was in me a desire to share that feeling. The desire to release emotion in music, which manifests the pain and euphoria at the same time, due to the inevitability of time”. - Just about your project, says the author.
He invited the following artist to partcipate in the project: Wojciech Kwapisiński, guitarist and tar player, Oori Shalev, the drummer form Israel and the Belgian saxophonist, Zeger Vandenbussch.

Le son du grisli - Jazz, musiques expérimentales et autres
Apres avoir tâtonné dans l’espace Olgierd Dokalski (trompette), Wojciech Kwapisiński (basse électrique), Oori Shalev (batterie et cymbales tres résonnantes) et Zeger Vandenbussche (saxophone alto & soprano, clarinette) tâtonnent dans d’autres pistes : la mélodie, l’unisson, le contrepoint.

Il faut dire que leur désir de meler leur petite musique aux mélodies séfarades des Balkans n’est pas sans danger, Zorn étant déja passé par la. Ici, Nor Cold ne cherche pas a en mettre plein la vue. Aucune réponse, copie ou réplique masadienne mais des souffles pétrifiés (Vandenbussche ravira les fans de John Lurie), des lignes claires, des harmonies freles, des tempos impressionnistes. Ils tâtonnent : ils trouveront.
