polish-jazz.blogspot.com - ALBUM OF THE MONTH
This is full-throttle avant-garde duo of quality as good as any great free jazz duos of the past or present times. Mature, deep and resonant this music is indeed 'coarse' since it is wholesome, edgy, massive. It has all irritating qualities of modern free jazz that it is difficult, ambitious, even repulsive at first. But I keep returning to this CD over and over again while many other nicer and well-trimmed albums though more attractive at first listen are already long gone from stack of CDs I keep close to my Marantz CD player for daily use.

Musicians standing behind this recording are bassist Fred Lonberg-Holm and clarinetist Piotr Mełech. Lonberg-Holm is a well known figure on American free jazz and improvised scene. He studied at Julliard School and later was taught by Anthony Braxton. His bio abounds in great names of musicians with whom he cooperated: Joe McPhee, Peter Brotzmann or Ken Vandermark. Among his many projects stands out the Valentine Trio where he plays together with Jason Raebke (bass) and Frank Rosaly (drums), both excellent players.

Therefore Piotr Mełech may count himself fortunate to have such a powerful, creative and charismatic partner. However he met the challenge and to no surprise: his recent streak of recordings is impressive indeed! Check at least those two described on our blog: 'Mazut Mazut' (2010) by Yazzbot and 'Love Communication' (2011) by Tfaruk. In both these projects he played significant role but this album as well as CDs by his band called Enterout Trio (review of albums by this band soon on our blog) may serve as best examples of his great talent.

Speaking shortly, certainly not a easy morsel to swallow this one is like late love: complicated, troublesome but shall leave your music soul 'shaken not stirred'...

Fred Lonberg-Holm - wiolonczelista i kompozytor, lider własnych zespołów: Valentine Trio i Lightbox Orxhestra. W 1995 roku przeniósł się do Chicago gdzie szybko podjął współpracę z muzykami tamtejszej sceny jazzowej i postrockowej - jest muzykiem i współtwórcą zespołów The Boxhead Ensemble, The Friction Brothers (z Michael'em Zerang'iem), The Flatlands Collective, Keefe Jackson's Fast Citizens, Joe McPhee Survival Unit III, Peter Brotzmann Chicago Tentet, Frame 4tet, Territory Band. Współpracował z wieloma czołowymi amerykańskimi i europejskimi muzykami sceny jazzowej i free improv wśród których wymienić należy: Jima Bakera, Johna Butchera, Wilberta DeJoode, Axela Doernera, Matsa Gustafssona, Charlotte Hug, Glenna Kotche, Petera Kowalda, Nicole Mitchell, Torstena Mullera, Jima O'Rourke, Jeffa Parkera, Davida Stakenasa, Bena Vida i Michaela Zeranga.

To nieco przydługi happy end, scena pożegnania bohaterów, gdy napięcie zostaje rozładowane. Wcześniej zostajemy wciągnięci w pełen zwrotów akcji suspens, w którym wątek tajemnicy podany jest lekko i przewrotnie lecz intrygująco zarazem, a emocje są pięknie i wyraźnie obrazowane.

"...Avant garde duos are pretty prevalent at the moment, no matter what the instrument(s). But what makes the best ones stand out is the quality of the musicianship and the depth of the material.
As with my earlier discussion on the Daniel Levin/Tim Daisy release, The Flower and The Bear, Fred Lonberg-Holm and Piotr Melech have created a richly diverse and highly challenging document that is both absorbing and thought provoking.
Lonberg-Holm, a member of various outfits in Chicago (most notably The Vandermark 5) and Melech, a growing presence of the Polish avant garde scene (including his trio Enterout) together, explore a strange world of soundscapes on Coarse Day. It's a densely packed session with movements that are multi-layered and demanding of the listener's concentration.
"Cloudburst" is pops and crackles with a sense of adventure. Lonberg-Holm maneuvers up and down the scales like a cat stuck in an aqueduct. Melech's clarinet(s) create an echo chamber that is both haunting and exhilarating. "Tangle Of Loops" feels almost anti-avant garde. I felt Longberg-Holm and Melech have a number of exchanges that are humorous and well improvised. My mind drifted into a jovial exploration into Raymond Scott (although I'm certain that was not the composers intentions). The use of electronics and sound manipulation on "Tangle Of Loops" gives the piece a schizophrenic edge that is genuinely exciting.
"Mildew Gourmets" moves out melodically in a somber spiritual pattern, similar to Coltrane's "A Love Supreme." It's hypnotic and relaxing tone is a calming departure point for the session and provides further insight into the duo's composition talents.
Coarse Day while challenging, is an album that once it sinks in--will become a fixture on your stereo. Lonberg-Holm and Melech have created an album that is filled with improvisation but also subtle accessibility that deserves intense listening. Haunting, beautiful and emotional."
