    Editor's Info:
"Cantabile in G-Minor", the premiere project of Leszek Kułakowski, one of the most significant Polish jazz musicians, is a very personal and sophisticated album, full of bold music notions and long-lasting sounds - an embodiment of perfection. Kułakowski has been performing his own compositions for years, and he is known for his very unique and exquisite style. The main idea of this album is the contrast, the search for untried connections mainly between the piano and the trumpet, with the contrabass and the percussion joining the melodic discourse at times.
The meeting of two artistic individuals, Eddy Henderson (an outstanding contemporary jazz trumpeter who carries on the Davies's lyricism and sound) with Leszek Kułakowski (the jazz visionary and a bold, uncompromising artist) led to a series of exciting music events.
Eddie Henderson was brought up in the love of jazz (his mother was a Cotton Club dancer and his father was a jazz singer) and he started learning the trumpet under the tutored eye of Louis Armstrong himself. Music trade secrets were introduced to him by Eddie Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Billie Holiday. He worked together with Herbie Hancock and he also played with a number of extremely significant artists, such as: Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Roy Haynes, Jackie McLean, Joe Henderson, Elvin Jones, Johnny Griffin, Slide Hampton, Benny Golson, Max Roach and McCoy Tyner.
Leszek Kułakowski, an artist of amazing music imagination, carried out many creative experiments with his music, drawing inspirations from Chopin, Kashubian folklore, Third stream, Komeda's yass projects and his arrangements for the symphony orchestra and Tomasz Stańko. Kułakowski is also the winner of Eurofonia's album of the year (Jazz Forum poll, 2000)
On this album you can also hear superb Jacek Pelc on percussion and a 'young jazz lion' Piotr Kułakowski on double bass.

    opis wydawcy:
Premierowy projekt 'Cantabile in G-minor' Leszka Kułakowskiego, jednego z najważniejszych polskich muzyków jazzowych, to bardzo osobista, wyrafinowana, pełna szerokich planów dźwiękowych i długo wybrzmiewających dźwięków forma doskonała.

Spotkanie artystycznych osobowości Eddie'go Hendersona (jednego z najwybitniejszych trębaczy współczesnego jazzu, kontunującego davisowski liryzm i brzmienie) z 'wizjonerem jazzu' Leszkiem Kułakowskim (artystą odważnym i bezkompromisowym) doprowadziło do ekscytujących zdarzeń muzycznych.

Eddie Henderson wychowany w miłości do jazzu (matka tancerka z Cotton Club, ojciec wokalista jazzowy), pierwsze lekcje gry na trąbce pobierał u samego Luis'a Armstrong'a. W tajniki wiedzy muzycznej wprowadzali Eddie'go Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Billie Holiday.

Laureat płyty roku 'Eurofonia' w ankiecie Jazz Forum w 2000r.

Obsadę zespołu uzupełniają znakomity Jacek Pelc na perkusji i 'młody lew jazzowy' Piotr Kułakowski na kontrabasie.

    Newsweek; 02 września 2011, ocena: * * * * 1
Polskie trio Leszka Kułakowskiego zaprosiło do swojego zespołu na czwartego wybitnego trębacza Eddiego Hendersona (grał m.in. z McCoyem Tynerem).

The MultiKulti label continues to document an ever-evolving scene in Poland and this disc features three new names for us. Trumpeter Eddie Henderson has been a longtime part of the New York jazz scene since his days with Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band some forty years ago. This is a pretty straight ahead date with some swell songs and lovely piano from Mr. Kulakowski, as well as charming solos from Mr. Henderson. Most of this is pretty laid back and often sublime.

Right now in Hollywood all kinds of pre-quels are trendy and this CD is kind of such project not from one but even from two perspectives. First, although released by Multikulti label in 2011 it was actually recorded in 2006. It therefore evidences an earlier stage in Kułakowski artistic development before magnificent "Code Numbers" (2010), the album where he ventured on very subtle and personal dialogue with modern avantjazz aesthetics. This CD however is wholesome mainstream effort with all spatiality and demureness of late ECM style augmented by bop notes from time to time coming from Eddie Henderson's trumpet.

And this is that second perspective as brought into recording by powerful Henderson presence who took lessons from legendary Louis Armstrong and had personal relationship with such luminaries of bop era trumpet as Miles Davis or Lee Morgan. Henderson saturates this recording with deep and wide legacy of Blue Note golden years which sounds surprisingly fresh though more than 50 years has passed since its peak!

In the end this album, like best Hollywood pre-quel movies, though definitely predictable and nothing-new, still is executed with such mastery, maturity and musicality that few mainstream recordings of this year 2011 could withstand comparison with it! The high level of muscianship it owes not only to above mentioned Eddie Henderson's trumpet or Leszek Kułakowski's piano but also to extremely timely and sensitive pulse as supplied by Piotr Kułakowski's double-bass and Jacek Pelc drums.

Speaking shortly, this one swings like hell and if you love mainstream jazz you should not let this CD pass unlistened to.

Check concert version of tune titled "Taniec świetej krowy" (Dance of holy cow"). Great music!

    Herausgeber's Info

'52442'. Przypomina mi to nieco muzykę Erica Satie. (...)
