about

Rui Eduardo Paes (www.jazz.pt):

The combination of a reed instrument and a piano has strong roots in chamber music, so much so that any equivalent format in every musical expression today are reproductions of the formal characteristics developed in the domain of “classical” or “savant” written music. In some way, it also happens with the duo formed by Catalan saxophonist Albert Cirera and Polish pianist Witold Oleszak, but both these musicians use it to deconstruct its own premises, procedures, vocabularies, grammars, idiomatic contours and even acoustic particularities. Figuratively, in the disjointed music we hear, and literally: Oleszak either uses ruined pianos or prepare them in order to radically transform its natural pitches, not with the purpose to have a percussive setup in hands, as many do since John Cage, but to go back to a pre-musical sound world enabling him to invent music as if the mother of all arts never existed; Cirera puts objects inside the saxophone hood, be it a beer tin can or a vibrating dildo, sometimes also disassembling the tool designed by Adolphe Sax and playing only its parts, forcing them to do what they can’t. You may think that chaos would be the result, but no: each improvisation (no scores around, and that makes also all the difference) has an architectural sense that astonishes us, and at the same time there’s a dramatic focus dealing not with our brains but with our guts and hearts. This is music freed from music itself, a kind of fresh restart. Are you prepared for it?
